The Honorable Patricia Schroeder
Former U.S. Representative (Colorado)
During her 24 years representing the Denver, CO district in Congress, The Honorable Pat Schroeder was a champion for women’s health. She led the fight in 1993 to mandate that the National Institutes of Health include women in all subject research. She also introduced many bills to help women and families including the Women’s Health Equity Act.

Viola Vaccarino, MD, PhD

Emory University School of Medicine
Dr. Vaccarino, who specializes in cardiovascular epidemiology and prevention, is being honored for her groundbreaking research on sex and race differences in the social, behavioral and emotional determinants of cardiovascular risk and their links to cardiovascular disease. Her latest research on emotional stress and cardiovascular disease in young women will improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in younger women.

Black Girls RUN!
Black Girls RUN! co-founders Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks are being honored for combating the obesity epidemic in the African-American community by launching more than 60 running groups across the country and creating a support system to help African-American women reach their health and fitness goals. Obesity is one of the main risk factors for heart disease. By encouraging African-American women to make health and fitness a priority in their lives, Black Girls RUN! is significantly contributing to the fight against heart disease in women, especially in African-American women.
